Nashville Veterans in Residence alum Daniel Kustelski’s company, Chalkline, recently secured $2.7 million in Series A funding. Chalkline provides customizable, white-labeled, free-to-play games to casinos, sports books, and media companies.
As just one example, for three years in a row, Chalkline has powered the Kentucky Derby Challenge in partnership with TwinSpires, the official betting partner of the Kentucky Derby. To win the $1,000,000 prize, fans must correctly answer a series of questions about the race, such as which horse will win the race, and which horse will post the fastest half-mile time.
A 2018 Supreme Court decision allowed states to legalize sports betting after a long history of litigation in the United States. At the time, the New York Times estimated that Americans cast $150 billion in (then) illegal wagers on professional and amateur sports every year. Since then, nearly 50 percent of states have legalized sports betting, and multiple have passed laws in favor of legalization. The shift represented a massive market opportunity, and Chalkline was poised to capture a share.
Co-Founder & Veteran, Daniel Kustelski
Daniel, a West Point graduate and Army veteran, had spent years working in sports betting and online gaming in South Africa. He founded Chalkline in 2016 and participated in the Nashville Veterans in Residence cohort in 2018. Chalkline initially focused on sports betting, and in 2021, expanded into lottery and casino games.
Veterans in Residence played an important role in growing the company to what it is today, Daniel said.
“Veterans in Residence connected me to several valuable groups of people—investors, potential clients, and most importantly, to other entrepreneurs that were down in the trenches building businesses, just like me. The Bunker Labs community is a huge asset for any entrepreneur, and especially for veteran-led businesses like Chalkline,” he said.
